Happy September my friends! The internet is trending with all things pumpkin spice and fall decor. Some of my favorite influencers have had an early start on the Fall celebrations, but in our house we wait until September. When the daylight gets visibiliy shorter, the afternoon chill hits the air and we spot the early signs of the leaves changing colors. Then it’s time for a cozy little September.
Here in Michigan, September is such a great month. It starts off with a soft introduction and gentleness. Each new day brings a new array of oranges, yellows, reds and burgundy. As the nights get cooler the trees prolong their colors. My favorites are the bright reds of fire burning bushes and the unique orange of legacy Maples.
But Fall is more than embracing the physical changes outside. It’s a chance to get introspective. Here are some questions as we welcome the season’s changes.
- What went well this year?
- What would be good to work hard on until the end of the year?
- What would you like to focus on?
Fall in Focus
For our home my focus is on restoring some order and creating new systems. Over the past few years of raising toddlers and preschoolers, things felt in constant disarray.
It makes me laugh when I see influencers online feeling overwhelmed by their curated mess. You know a basket of toys spread across the floor and some disheveled throw pillows. This last year our living room was turned into a permanent gymnastics center. Equipped with a bar, mats, balance beam and aerial hanging from our ceiling. That’s what happens when your husband does the Christmas shopping(which was awesome BTW).
Anyways, I totally loved the season- my children always home, jumping and chasing each other. But a new season is upon us; playdates and birthdays, football and holidays. It’s time to embrace it and be intentional about it. So I came up with my two things to focus on this Fall:
Focus 1: Creating a cozy home that is ready for drop in company.
Focus 2: Create a comfortable and family focused evening routine.
Finding your Fall Focus
As the seasons change, find your focus. Pick one or two things to embrace over the next few months. Pick something that’s good for your soul. In the true spirit of embracing a cozy little September, go for a walk, without the noise of podcasts, or music.
Just you and nature and pray about it. Ask yourself “what’s something that I can really do to feed my soul?” Perhaps it’s to pray more, deepen relationships with loved ones or challenge yourself with something new.
As we embrace the beauty of change around us, it’s the perfect time to focus on the beauty inside us. It’s sometimes lost on us when we’re just going about the daily and seasonal tasks.

My cozy September– I am making a little time for baking. I turn my favorite cooking show, some parisienne cafe music, have a glass of wine and bake a pie. Each week a different pie . I have vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and caramel sauces on hand-ready for fall visiting. I also have many elderly neighbors who love a piece of pie.
